Blame! Fortress of Silicon Creatures (珪素生物の砦 Keiso Seibutsu no Toride[1]) is a one-shot bonus comic included in the limited edition Blu-Ray release of the 2017 film. It serves as an epilogue to the film's story, which is distinct from the original manga.
Synopsis[]
A "stage 4 juvenile" silicon creature appeals to a tribunal of her community's leaders. She claims that the Net Terminal gene is extinct, making their deadly war with Killy meaningless, appealing to a common ancestry with humans. The leaders argue that Silicon creatures diverged from baseline humans eons ago in order to adapt themselves to the City, becoming superior beings who cannot coexist with humans. The juvenile counters that silicon creatures nonetheless rely on humans to increase their own population. The leaders dismiss the juvenile, and afterwards discuss whether to "adjust her mind" or destroy her because of her dangerous thinking.
Outside a large compound, Killy has defeated a defending silicon force. He carries Cibo, who is instantiated in a small cortical emulation device. As the juvenile looks on, they enter the facility. They come upon a workshop of mechanical bodies, and Cibo transfers herself into one, configuring it with her appearance.
Further on, they enter a chamber filled with human embryos grown in pods. Cibo concludes that they are meant to become silicon creature larvae. A silicon attendant attacks them by emitting a stream of biological mass which rapidly develops embryonic forms. Cibo uses a laser weapon to free Killy from this restraint, and Killy vaporizes the attendant with a graviton shot which penetrates far into the structure.
In an adjacent section, they discover an entire village of humans, apparently confined to the facility for breeding purposes. Killy scans the area, finds no indication of Net Terminal genes, and leaves.
Thereafter, the juvenile sympathetically remains to protect the village from both Safeguards and Builders.
Notes and Trivia[]
- Presumably, the attendant attempts to defend the growth chamber by weaponizing a bio-engineering tool built into its body. That tool may be a clue to the nature of the captives' exploitation - rather than seizing a portion of their offspring directly, the silicon creatures regularly harvest genetic material, to ensure a robust diversity in the resulting silicon population.
- In this continuity, Cibo seems to be familiar with the silicon life cycle. This contrasts with the original manga, where she is unfamiliar with silicon life, initially confusing them with Safeguards.[2]
